Ceiling Fan Installation, Done Properly

Fitting a ceiling fan properly is more than screwing a bracket to a joist.

Joist and mount assessment. Finding a fixing point rated to carry something that spins and moves air, which is a different job to holding a static light fitting.

Wiring and switching. A dedicated switch or remote control set up, wired in cleanly rather than tapped awkwardly off an existing circuit.

The fan itself. DC or AC motor options, with or without a light kit, balanced and levelled once mounted.

Old fan removal. Where a tired fan is coming down, the old wiring gets checked before the new one goes up.

Multi-room jobs. Several fans across a house, planned and quoted as one job rather than piecemeal.

Whatever's on the ceiling now, the fixing point gets checked before anything gets hung. Skip that step and you end up with a fan that's technically installed but not actually safe to run at speed.

Balmain's older terraces often have original timber ceilings, and the first job is locating something solid enough to hold a fan through years of spinning, not just a light. Plaster ceilings in particular need a properly located fixing point, not a lucky guess with a stud finder.

Around Montague Street and the surrounding terrace rows, roof cavities tend to be tight and low, which changes how cable gets run to a new switch. It's manageable work, provided the person doing it has actually crawled through a roof space this size before.

Where a ceiling has never had a fan, there's often no dedicated switch either, just a single light circuit doing double duty. Wiring in proper switching alongside the fan means the two end up working independently, not one circuit trying to cover both.

That single-circuit setup is common enough across the older terraces that we treat it as the default assumption, not the exception. Better to plan for it at the quote stage than discover it once the ceiling's already open.

4. Tested and balanced. Run at full speed to check for wobble or noise before we call it done.

A single fan is usually done and dusted in two to three hours. Several fans, or a job needing new circuits run, gets a realistic timeframe agreed upfront, not an optimistic guess to win the booking.

Ceiling fans pair naturally with new lighting when a room's due for both, or follow a board upgrade once there's finally circuit capacity to spare.
